Homemade Cinnamon Rolls!

Cinnamon Rolls are sweet, rich buns or pastries full of ground cinnamon, sugar and butter.  These are basically made of a sheet yeast dough onto which a mixture of ground cinnamon, sugar and butter is spread.  The dough is then rolled up, cut into individual portions and baked.

I’m sure these sinful and delicious Cinnamon Rolls need no introduction to many of you, being a common pastry in North America and Europe.  Did you know that Cinnamon Roll day is celebrated today in Sweden?!  🙂  Cinnamon Rolls are presumed to originate from Sweden where they are known as “Kanelbulle”.  I guess this is the perfect time to enjoy a freshly baked Cinnamon Roll, warm from the oven.  🙂  Happy Cinnamon Roll Day!!!

INGREDIENTS :

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • 3 1/4 cup flour (+ 1/2 cup more if needed)
  • 1 package yeast (10g)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tbs ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt (if using unsalted butter)
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 egg

Cinnamon filling :

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar (5 – 6 tbs)
  • 1 tbs ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbs flour (prevents filling from oozing out)
  • 1/4 – 1/3 cup softened butter
  • 1/3 cup raisins (optional)

METHOD :

  • Add the yeast to ¼ cup lukewarm water along with about 1 tsp of sugar.  Stir and keep aside for 10 – 15 minutes; until foamy.  Make sure the water is just warm and not hot!
  • Meanwhile warm the milk in microwave or on stove top.  Add butter and stir until melted.  Let it cool down to lukewarm.  Add the vanilla extract to this and mix.
  • In a large bowl, mix 2 ¼ cup flour (keeping the rest to add later), sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon.  Add the milk-butter mixture, yeast mixture and beaten egg to this and mix well.
  • Add in remaining flour, ½ cup at a time until a soft dough is formed.  Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth (about 5minutes).
  • Put back into bowl and cover with a wet towel.  Let the dough rest in a warm place for 45 – 60 minutes until doubled in size.

  • In the mean time, lightly grease your baking dish or tray.  Mix the brown sugar, ground cinnamon and flour for the filling.
  • You can use other spices as well, such as nutmeg, cardamom or ground cloves.  A pinch of ground cloves is known to enhance the cinnamon flavour.
  • Once your dough is ready, roll it out on a floured surface into a 12 by 9 inch rectangle (approximately).
  • Spread the softened butter evenly on top.  You may use more butter if desired.  I preferred keeping it to minimum.  🙂  Sprinkle the cinnamon filling on the butter.
  • Add the raisins next.  Other fillings like chopped nuts or dates, shredded coconut or orange zest may also be used.
  • Roll up the dough tightly and pinch the seam to seal.  Using a serrated knife or pastry cutter, cut dough into even sized rolls.  (about 12 – 14)
  • Place each rolls in baking dish with cut side up, leaving some space in between as they will expand considerably when baked.
  • Cover and allow to rest for about 30 minutes.  The rolls will almost double in size.  (At this point the rolls can be refrigerated or even frozen to  be baked later)
  • Bake in preheated oven at 180 degrees C for 20 – 25 minutes until the top is browned.  You can check if the centre or edges are done with the help of a fork.

I preferred eating these just as they are and simply sprinkled some powdered sugar on top for a finishing touch.  🙂  I know Cinnamon Rolls are even more irresistible with a yummy frosting or glaze.  So if desired, allow to cool for 10 – 15 minutes before adding a powdered sugar glaze or cream cheese frosting.

If you want freshly baked Cinnamon Rolls for breakfast in the morning, don’t worry about all the time it’s gonna take!  You can do most of the work the night before.  Prepare your dough, let it rise and make the rolls.  Then place the individual rolls in your baking pan and keep it in the refrigerator.  All you have to do next morning is to bake them!  🙂

Cinnamon Rolls are perfect when you want something special for breakfast or tea time.  Making these at home might be a bit time consuming, but it’s totally worth it.  And there’s nothing better than the fragrant smell that fills your house when they are baking in the oven!!  🙂
